Tmoney or EZL: the simple transit choice
These rechargeable cards are the familiar choice for subways and buses, and can also work with affiliated merchants. They are useful when you want a straightforward card for city travel. Purchase, top-up, and refund rules vary by retailer and machine, so read the instructions at the point of sale.
Visitor prepaid cards: payment plus transit
Products such as WOWPASS and other visitor-focused cards may combine payment, currency exchange, and transit functions. That can reduce the number of cards you carry, but compare where they are sold, how they are topped up, whether a passport is needed, and how a remaining balance is refunded.
Foreign-issued cards: useful, not universal
Use your normal credit or debit card at many card-accepting shops, but do not make it your only plan for every transport machine, local bus, or small purchase. Carry a second payment option and a modest amount of Korean won, especially on arrival day.
A practical arrival sequence
Do this in order.
- 01
Pay for your first ride. If you are taking AREX, check the current official ticket method for your terminal and route. A single-use option can be enough if you have not chosen a transit card yet.
- 02
Choose the card after you know your plan. A short Seoul-only visit, a multi-city trip, and a payment-plus-exchange need are different situations. Do not buy a product only because it is popular online.
- 03
Keep a backup. Before boarding a local bus or arriving late at night, make sure you have one alternative payment method and a saved Korean address for your destination.

Keep your plan flexible: a transit card for local rides, a payment card that works for your purchases, and enough backup for a machine or route that does not accept your preferred method.
